Husky's Atlantic Region is seeking an experienced professional Drilling Engineering Lead (Exploration) for the St. John's, NL office.

The Drilling Engineering Lead (Exploration) will be a member of Husky Energy Atlantic Region (AR) Exploration Drilling Team. The candidate will lead the drilling engineering team in the planning and execution of all drilling operations involved in the project and will report functionally to the Manager, Exploration Drilling.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the Exploration Drilling Engineering Team in carrying out the planning and execution of all drilling operations in an efficient, cost effective, safe and environmentally responsible manner in accordance with the Husky's Operational Integrity Management System and in compliance with the company's Drilling and HSEQ policies and procedures, including the New Well Gated Process, as well as Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) regulations and other applicable legislature
  • Be responsible for ensuring that drilling programs, program amendments, and dispensation to policies are prepared on schedule and are adequately risk assessed
  • Candidate will be required to carry out duties working in close collaboration with the Drilling Operations team, Subsurface (Geology & Geophysics) team, Health Safety Environment & Quality (HSEQ), Contracts/Purchasing, Logistics, Rig Contractor, Service Companies, and other personnel assigned to the project team
  • Be responsible for preparing accurate drilling Approval For Expenditures (AFE's) and tracking progress against the AFE, and daily well costs, during the operating phase
  • Candidate will lead Drilling Engineering Team in technical reviews, peer reviews, risk assessments, etc for the project
  • Compile well license documentation for submission to the C-NLOPB (ex. Approval to Drill Well, Approval to P&A Well, End of Well Report)
  • Be responsible for ensuring that post well analysis and documentation of best practices and End of Well reports are prepared for each well in a timely manner
  • Prepare scopes of work, conduct technical/commercial evaluation of bids and prepare recommendations of award for all the equipment and services required for the drilling and well testing operations in this project; ensure that all materials, equipment and services ordered for the project are suitable for the intended applications and well conditions
  • Prepare forecast for long lead equipment and ensure orders are placed for timely deliveries
  • Be proactive and lead drilling engineering team in optimizing operations and resolving operational issues on a day-to-day basis
  • Establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on a daily basis during operational phase
  • Support on-site operations during critical and emergency operations, including as occasional Drilling & Completions Liaison in the Husky Emergency Response Team
  • Mentor less experienced Drilling Engineers
  • Ensure that key well engineering lessons from incidents and best practices elsewhere are reviewed, and relevant learning incorporated


Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Member in good standing or eligible for membership with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
  • At least 10 years working experience
  • Preferred candidate will have at least 7 years experience in offshore drilling operations with MODU's, ideally to include experience in harsh environments
  • Current IQCF or equivalent in well control training
  • Combination of both international and local working experience would be considered an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to work collaboratively within a team, and with others outside of the formal organization (e.g. service providers, vendors, contractors), to achieve goals

Medical (Physical) Requirements/Standards:

  • There may be occasions when you will be required to travel and work offshore to support offshore operations.
