Job Summary

The Materials and Corrosion (M&C) Engineer is part of the mechanical discipline engineering team and provides technical support for asset integrity design/monitoring and corrosion management. Works with maintenance & construction, operations, process, and mechanical reliability to select equipment material, coatings/linings, refractory, and provide joining/welding recommendations. The M&C Engineer leads corrosion control programs and organizes/plans corrosion monitoring activities. This position has direct responsibility to conduct corrosion evaluations, failure analysis, and recommend improvements/mitigation strategies. This position is key to maintaining & improving the plant’s successful execution of COIMS and HRO principles.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and/or maintain asset integrity through material selection/specification:
    • Materials selection and technical support for projects, operations, maintenance, and reliability.
    • Coatings/linings selection and technical support for projects, operations, maintenance, and reliability.
    • Refractory selection and technical support for projects, operations, maintenance, and reliability.
    • Specification and monitoring of new/existing idle equipment preservation for projects, operations, maintenance, reliability, and supply chain management.
    • Participate in PHA/HAZOPS, Risk Assessments, MOCs
    • Develop and review best practices and specifications.
    • Develop/optimize appropriate PM/PdM using SAP with Asset Care/Reliability/Maintenance/Operations
  • Design, implement, and optimize strategies/programs for corrosion control:
    • Identify corrosion circuits and damage mechanisms
    • Initiate projects / develop installation recommendations for improvements (material, coating, fabrication)
    • Develop recommendations for chemical treatment programs (inhibitor, scavenger, etc.) with process/operations/vendors
    • Develop sampling/monitoring locations and frequencies, Integrity Operating Windows, and/or KPIs
    • Develop/Maintain/Update corrosion control documents/databases
    • Participate in the Crude Acceptance Matrix (CAM) approval process and provide recommendations
    • Develop/optimize appropriate PM/PdM using SAP with Asset Care/Reliability/Maintenance/Operations
  • Provide technical support for corrosion monitoring systems and programs optimization:
    • Support coupon monitoring and advice for appropriate inspection techniques
    • Organize/plan coupon monitoring, sampling, and external monitoring
    • Interpret fluid analysis, coupon, sampling, monitoring data results with Inspection/Reliability/Process/Operations and provide recommendations
    • Review chemical treatment program results with process/operations/vendors and provide recommendations for improvements/optimizations
    • Develop/optimize appropriate PM/PdM using SAP with Asset Care/Reliability/Maintenance/Operations
  • Manage Cathodic Protection Systems:
    • Develop and implement CP system corrosion management strategies/program
    • Review annual CP surveys and monthly rectifier checks with Electrical/Inspection/Operations and
      provide recommendations
    • Conduct or manage field CP measurement of impressed current and sacrificial systems
    • Interpret results of CP system monitoring and provide recommendations for improvements/optimization.
  • Conduct Corrosion Evaluation/Assessments and Failure Analysis:
    • Lead sample (piping/equipment/deposit/liquid) collection/preservation effort with Operations/Maintenance/Process/Reliability
    • Perform/Coordinate basic sample analysis and coordinate advanced sample analysis
    • Identify/evaluate damage/failure mechanisms, bad actors and develop continuous improvement options
    • Coordinate/Develop report and recommendations from sample analysis
    • Conduct/Coordinate/Participate in root-cause analysis of failures and/or Health & Safety Investigations
    • Conduct Fitness for Service with Fixed Equipment Engineers
    • Develop and circulate technical bulletins, best practices, specifications
    • Present findings as required and update asset performance management and/or mechanical integrity
      database(s)
  • Provide technical support for joining and welding solutions:
    • Recommend joining/welding processes, procedures, and specify limitations/requirements
    • Review and approve joining/welding design(s) and procedures
    • Develop and review best practices and specifications.
  • Maintain an efficient and safe work environment, following all safety policies and guidelines as established by Husky Energy and the Lima Refining Company.
    • Actively participate in monthly Safety Meetings.
    • Maintain currency for required safety/policy training

 

Experience

  • 5+ years demonstrated experience with design, inspection, construction, repair, and maintenance of pressure equipment, process piping, and tanks
  • Strong knowledge and experience in welding, materials selection, corrosion mechanisms, and mitigation techniques
  • Demonstrated experience leading material failure analysis (Apparent Cause, Root Cause)
  • Demonstrated experience performing weld design reviews and reviewing vendor WPS/PQRs
  • Demonstrated experience with company standards knowledge and compliance
  • 5+ years of experience working in a refinery or related oil & gas/petrochemical facility.
  • 5+ years of experience and thorough understanding of API, ASM International, ASME, AWS, NACE, and SSPC codes/practices/standards: API 510 / 570 / 653 / 571 / 579 / 580, 582, ASME
  • B31.3 / BPVC / PCC-2, AWS D1.1
  • Advanced knowledge of plant maintenance work practices, e.g., work requests, work orders, job plans, procedures, material requisitions and preventative maintenance, equipment history, spare parts etc.
  • Good PC skills and proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience with Meridium or other Asset Performance Management Software
  • Experience with PCMS or other Mechanical Integrity Software
  • Experience with SAP or other Business Enterprise Software
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated business and technical writing and presentation skills

 

Education & Professional Designations

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Materials, Mechanical, or Welding Engineering is required
  • Masters of Science Degree in Materials, Mechanical, or Welding Engineering is an asset
  • Professional Engineer License is an asset
  • NACE - Refining Corrosion Technologist Certification is an asset
  • NACE - Cathodic Protection Technologist is an asset
  • NACE - Protective Coating Specialist is an asset
  • API 571 - Corrosion and Materials Certification is an asset
  • API 577 - Welding Inspection and Metallurgy Certification is an asset
  • AWS - Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) is an asset
  • ASM - Welding Metallurgy Certificate is an asset
