Job Summary
The Superior Refinery has an opening for a Process Safety Engineer. This safety critical position is responsible for providing technical and functional expertise and leadership in process safety for the Refinery and Terminals. Additionally, this position will support the implementation and sustainment of Safety and Operations Integrity (S&OI) processes that are aligned with the Husky/Cenovus Operational Integrity Management System (COIMS).  Position will help to assure compliance to regulatory standards and statutes for key aspects of SOI specific to the operations of the assigned entity. This position will partner with the refinery to promote a High Reliability Organization with a focus on continuous improvement. 

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead periodic unit operations risk analysis process to ensure health and effectiveness of associated risk prevention barriers.  Processes include facilitation of PHAs, major hazard identification, evaluation of risk and barriers for effectiveness, assurance of ongoing maintenance of top risk register (asset level), Bowties, Major Accident Hazards (MAH) and other risk analysis processes.
  • Coach and mentor asset leadership and personnel on process safety topics (PHA, MOC, Bowties, MAH, Industry and corporate standards, etc) with training and education and daily interactions.
  • Maintaining and collaborating facility siting refinery and conducting facility siting reviews that enable the safe placement of temporary and permanent buildings within the refinery.
  • Assisting with MOC reviews for PSM related items.
  • Fostering collaboration between the Refinery and Corporate SOI Team, leveraging the Corporate Technical Authorities and multi-disciplinary support as a conduit for communication and continuous improvement.
  • Support the proper classification and investigation of process safety incidents. This includes coaching and mentoring site leadership to own and drive the actions to prevent re-occurrence. 

 

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 yrs. experience as a facilitator of HAZOP and LOPA PHAs
  • Minimum 3-5 yrs. experience with Root Cause Analysis and Incident Investigations
  • Minimum 3-5 yrs. working knowledge of performing safety audits and inspections
  • Minimum 3-5 yrs. working knowledge of SAP or other Enterprise software
  • Minimum 3-5 yrs. experience working with 3rd party consultants and contractors
  • Minimum 3-5 years process engineering, process safety engineering, operations, or operations management experience
  • Minimum 3-5 yrs. experience in the petrochemical industry
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements in the petrochemical or related industry

 

Education & Professional Designations

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering with preference given to Chemical Engineering
  • Process Safety Professional Certification (CCPS, Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center or similar 3rd party firm) is an asset
  • HAZOP and/or LOPA certification is an asset
  • Process Safety Auditing certification is an asset

 

Working Conditions

  • You may be required to work in a wide variety of conditions due to the nature of refinery and terminal operation (working at heights, in confined spaces, with noise, in extreme weather conditions)
